A lot of women these days are not getting married early. Due to change in society, they are taking their own sweet time before tying the knot.
Persons who marry late are likely to have characteristics inimical to marital success. Moreover, they are more likely to “settle” for spouses that fall short of their ideal.
1. Infertility
Infertility is one of the biggest problems faced by married couples who decide to marry late. Women who get married later are past their prime biological time for conception which can lead to many problems like infertility and other gynecological issues.
The trend towards later marriage and delayed childbearing is particularly marked in countries with low TFRs and high levels of childlessness. In these countries, employment conditions for young people are often less favourable and the challenge of combining work with family life is particularly acute (Zuanna and Billari 2002; Caltabiano 2016).
Delayed marriage also reduces the amount of children that couples can have in their lifetimes. For this reason, it is important to consider your fertility options before you tie the knot. This way, you can plan accordingly and avoid infertility related problems.
2. Decrease in Marital Stability
People who get married late often lose their interest in the relationship. They also miss out on a lot of things that younger couples do together. This is because the zeal and excitement of youth takes a back seat. Moreover, many women are more focused on their career and they have to go for work every day which leaves them less time to spend with their spouses.
This lack of zeal can cause marital problems. Moreover, persons who get married at a later age may not have much background information about their prospective spouses and this can lead to bad marriages. In addition, some persons might not be able to connect with their spouses and they might be unwilling to make any changes. This could also lead to a mediocre marriage.
3. Financial Problems
Getting married later in life can lead to financial problems. It may put a couple in a higher tax bracket, thus reducing the amount of money they can save or invest. It can also be an issue if one or both spouses bring debt or valuable assets into the marriage, such as property or stock portfolios.
Money issues can be a major stressor and point of tension in any relationship, especially when they aren’t handled correctly. If a couple isn’t on the same page about their finances, anger and resentment can quickly flare up. Credit card debt is particularly problematic, as it can make both partners feel used and unappreciated. Having an open conversation with your partner about money before marriage can help prevent these issues.
4. Rush for Kids
A major disadvantage of late marriage is that people start to feel rushed to make kids. Their friends, family members and even their neighbourhood people keep asking them about having kids. This makes them sway from their personal goals and concentrate more on their family life.
As a result, they miss out on the fun activities that young couples do together. The zeal and excitement that they had in their younger days takes a hit and they end up feeling bored with their spouses. They are also overly dependent on their jobs and hence don’t have enough time to devote to their children. This leads to a lot of stress and tension in their marriage. This can be harmful for the long term health of their marriages.
5. Relationship Problems
Marriage is a serious commitment and you must be sure to marry at the right age. If you delay your wedding, you may have more time to live your life as you like it. You can indulge in your hobbies, travel and spend more quality time with friends. You will also have more money and be in a better financial position.
However, if you marry later, you will have less time to focus on your relationship and may not be in a position to handle the responsibilities of marriage. You will also be past your sexual peak and this can create problems in your sex life. You might also have to deal with the constant questions of your family and friends about when you are planning on having kids.
